OK, so you just got back from AT, and school is starting next week, your MCI's are late and your honey-dew list is now longer than last month's HD List. So here's a freebie. Sort of...Winds of Change has a lot of good reading material (I know, I know as if you didn't have enough already) and one section from which I swiped this baby. He doesn't mind knowing it is for a good cause: keeping reservist up to date. Don't use the Dinosaurs of the MSM for SOP. Bookmark WofC site. Check back ASAP

• * There were 12,000 IED attacks in 2004. That is 12 thousand. IEDs are not an automatic fatality. Most miss. Even those that hit usually are not effective. There is a soldier in the 256 who has 18 IED hits to date (that they can figure... he doesn't brag and its the gunners and otters that are trying to total up the hits), and not a scratch on him or his crew. There are those on IED Hunting teams that refuse to come off hunting duties and have had ZERO IED hits... they have been shot at, but ZERO hits on IEDS. LESSON LEARNED: IEDs are an inefficient way to attack.
• * There are units that have spent their ENTIRE tour with soft-sided HUMVEES and have had far less IED hits that those in Up-Armored or fully armored vehicles. In fact, they had their doors off. Even today, Rangers and SF run around in bare vehicles and don't get attacked. The reason - the entire convoy was sharp, at the ready, and was able to visually detect IEDS, use aggressive driving to throw off timing of IEDs, and were obviously ready to return fire. They were NOT worth hitting. An up-armored conmoy with everyone's head down and hiding is a much better target. ALL ARMOR CAN BE DEFEATED!!! There have been tanks as well as Strykers and Up-Armored HUMVEES (the M1114's) that have been hit and destroyed. Often (not always), its because they were complacent, they established patterns, they trusted their armor to save them, and otherwise they gave the enemy the means to predict their movements and the comfort (based on lack of alertness) to target them. LESSON LEARNED: If everyone is alert and in th right mindset, you're far less likely to targeted, regardless of armor. Armor has often led to false sense of security.
• * Know your basic skills - shoot, move, communicate. Know how to fire all weapons. Know how to operate radios, do call for fire, call for MEDEVAC , call in IEDs, etc. Know how to drive, to include how to "push" friendly vehicles out of a the kill zone or move other vehicles out of the way (the enemy uses junked cars as obstacles to channel movement). "Move" includes know how to change a tire like a NASCAR pit crew or how to execute a "bump" plan (the plan to stack extra people in a vehicle after losing a vehicle in the convoy.) For those that have travelled in a big city before... if you move out with a purpose and look like you know what you're doing, you're not an attractive target. If it looks like you are in charge of an area after an IED attack, they won't want to attack with small arms and lose everyone (as they often do... its why they usually just use IEDs unless people get lazy).
• * Security at all times. If you are safeguarding a site, like an IED, do NOT spend time looking inwards at the IED. Look out, observe patterns and behavior. If just part of the perimeter gets lazy, that is where they will attack. If you're in the wire, know where your equipment is, know where shelters are, and know what the drill is in your area. Know what protection your ECM provide - they are highly effective and are forcing the enemy to move from 90% radio-controlled IEDs to other, less desirable means of initiation.
• * Have brutally honest AAR after EVERY movement. There are no such things as "simple convoys", they are all combat patrols. So, even if there were zero hits, review your conduct. Did you follow a pattern from previous ops? What did everyone see in terms of changes to the terrain or people? Did your vehicle stay alert? The other ones? If you can keep each other sharp, avoid patterns, and constantly learn, it dramatically decreases your chance at being targeted. There is always room to improve, always something that slipped. Get after it.

The Distinguished Service Cross -- second only to the Medal of Honor in military decorations -- has been awarded to U.S. Army Col. James H. Coffman Jr. for his role in leading Iraqi Special Police Commandos through a 5 1/2-hour battle against thugs trying to collect commando heads. Col. Coffman took over as CO when the thug ambush killed or wounded all Iraq officers and using eye contact and sign lanuage led the counter attack under heavy fire. After thug fire shot out his rifle and shooting hand he picked up an abandoned AK and fired with his other hand. The American people have to wise up to the media's tricks. We are involved in a propaganda war that may be more important than what happens on the battlefield. Newsweek's false "Koran in the toilet" story was only one example of how we are losing the media war. It caused violent protests across the Middle East and 17 deaths. The new prisoner abuse images, obtained by an Army soldier who helped uncover the scandal, is not "false" in the Newsweek sense. But it will be exploited to give a false or warped perception of what U.S. military personnel are doing in Iraq. As Myers says in a court document, "It is probable that Al-Qaeda and other groups will seize upon these images and videos as grist for their propaganda mill which will result in, besides violent attacks, increased terrorist recruitment, continued financial support, and exacerbation of tensions between the Iraqi and Afghani populaces and U.S. and Coalition forces."

Actually, it won't just be Al Qaeda. Our own media will endlessly exploit the photographs. The story will be so big that cable-television news might temporarily drop the Natalee Holloway story. Our media seem to operate by the standard of using and exploiting anything that will undermine the war and President Bush. Lately, this has been Cindy Sheehan, the poor brainwashed mother of a dead soldier. But more Abu Ghraib photos would be too good to ignore, at least for most of our media.

We have to face up to the fact that the enemy has the U.S. on the run, using our own media against us. When Al Qaeda's number two man, Ayman al-Zawahiri, recently threatened a Vietnam in Iraq, he was referring to an American defeat but it's clear that he was not just referring to the military aspect of the conflict. The U.S. was not defeated militarily in Vietnam. We lost because our own media came to believe it was a cause not worth fighting. That caused the American people to lose heart and the Congress to cut and run.

All's well that ends well. Former Marine Carl Basham will get a note from Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson stating that Basham qualifies for legal residence requirements. Papa Ray sent us note stating that our young Marine was a Louisiana resident at the time of enlistment and that was the glitch that got the Harpies all up tight. However, Commis Patterson has pronounced his ominous dominous: "Basham changed his official residence to Austin more than a year ago" After I read Ray's note I googled Basham's name and have been reading comments. stories and editorials all over the net. My favorite is from the Texas Lufkin Daily who appraised the many politico's who ran over LOL's in their haste to rescue Basham:

Far as we're concerned, any veteran who wants to attend a community college in Texas ought to get the lowest rate, Texas resident or not. That's the least we can do for people who have volunteered to serve their country, in times of war or peace.

Here in Ohio you could not escape talk of the fourteen Marines killed, and that is all the information the media had. They broke this story so fast that the Marines could not even notify the families before hand. This led to absolute panic among the 3/25 families. I was able to find out pretty early that the casualties came from Lima Company (based in Columbus, OH), and so began contacting as many family members from Weapons Company and Headquarters Company (based in Akron, OH and Brookpark, near Cleveland, OH, respectively) as I could to mitigate the damage. But the damage had been done. My phone calls were answered by crying wives and mothers, sitting in front of the TV hoping for any information, horrified that I was calling with the worst of news.

Whether Sunni killed Shi'ite or Shi'ite killed Sunni, Mr. Vincent knew murder when he saw it. It will be interesting to see whether the media will attribute Mr. Vincent's death to "guerillas" or to "paramilitary death squads". But in a sense it will not matter. He was witness to the necessity for honesty and the survival of outrage; conscious of how near death stands to all of us in the workaday world without watchful men ready to give the alarm with just words.

The Chechen rebel leader who organized a deadly hostage-taking attack on a Russian school last year admitted he was a terrorist but said in an interview being broadcast Thursday that each Russian had to feel the impact of war before it would stop in Chechnya.


Despite the fact that Besayev admitted to being a terrorist, the Associated Press article continues the story calling him, and other Chechen terrorists, "rebels." The media doesn't like suing the t-word because it is a "loaded" and "emotional" term. But doesn't that pretty much become irrelevant when the "rebels," "guerillas," or "militants" call themselves terrorists?"

A simple task that all NCOs should, at your next reserve meeting, act upon. Take out your cell phones. Key in your In Case of Emergency phone number, save, then type I C E. Took me a couple of mo-mo's to key in spouse, ICE 1 and ICE 2, son.

A campaign encouraging people to enter a emergency contact number in their mobile phone's memory under the heading "ICE" (in Case of Emergency) is spreading rapidly as a particular consequence of terrorist attacks [Hat Tip: Deborah J. Martell]. But it's a good idea for other reasons, too.

Originally established as a nation wide campaign in the UK, "ICE" allows paramedics or police to be able to quickly contact a designated relative or next of kin in an emergency situation. The idea is the brainchild of East Anglian Ambulance Service Paramedic Bob Brotchie and was launched in May of this year. Bob has been a paramedic for 13 years, and said:

"I was reflecting on some of the calls I've attended at the roadside where I had to look through the mobile phone contacts struggling for information on a shocked or injured person."

The Middle East does not need a reformation in Islam as much as a war to eradicate a minority of religious fanatics who are empowered through their blackmail of dictatorships — and to do so in a way that leads to constitutional government rather than buttressing a police state. So far governments have chosen appeasement and bribery — if at times some torture when demands for investigations rise — and so time is running out for the entire region.

There are a million Muslims in Israel — the mother of all evils in the radical Islamic mind. Yet very few have turned themselves into global jihadists, and hundreds are not blowing themselves up daily in Tel Aviv, much less in London or New York. Why? Perhaps the twofold knowledge that they have rights in Israel not found in the Arab world that they don’t wish to forfeit, and they are surrounded by people who would not tolerate their terrorism.

For the first time, Afghans and Iraqis have a stake in their own future — and know the United States is at last on the right side of history and intends to stay and win by their side.

- Lie about your strength for years before 9/11. If your sodliers don't show up for drill, still count them as present. If your soldiers can't pass the PT test, pass the weigh-in, or qualify with their weapon, you still count them as 'combat ready.' In the larger sense, if you are a state national guard or reserve RRC, tell your boss (HRC, or NGB) that you are manned at 100% strength even when you know you couldn't field more than 60% of the people you are supposed to have.
- Early on in OEF, ask for volunteers to do the mission, instead of mobilizing whole units and 'inconveniencing' people. This will take 10-20% of the soldiers out of the rest of your units, further exacerbating the strength problem.
- Volunteer to send units to war that you know are broke. Do this so that your boss (HRC or NGB) doesn't know that you were lying all along about your personnel shortages.
- Take the units that are now at 40 to 50% deployable strength and involuntarily strip other soldiers from reserve units in your command to fill them up to 100%. Don't worry if the soldiers you piecemeal together into a unit don't have the right MOS (military occupational specialty) or the right rank. Send the newly cobbled-together unit through some barely-adequate post-moblization training and then it's 'off to war' for them."

The Dallas News is striking a blow against moral equivalence calling child killers terrorist instead of insurgents. It is a start. We call them thugs.

Two words not uncommon to editorial pages are "resolve" and "sacrifice," especially as they relate to war.

Today, this editorial board resolves to sacrifice another word – "insurgent" – on the altar of precise language. No longer will we refer to suicide bombers or anyone else in Iraq who targets and kills children and other innocent civilians as "insurgents."

The notion that these murderers in any way are nobly rising up against a sitting government in a principled fight for freedom has become, on its face, absurd. If they ever held a moral high ground, they sacrificed it weeks ago, when they turned their focus from U.S. troops to Iraqi men, women and now children going about their daily lives.

They drove that point home with chilling clarity Wednesday in a poor Shiite neighborhood. As children crowded around U.S. soldiers handing out candy and toys in a gesture of good will, a bomb-laden SUV rolled up and exploded.

These children were not collateral damage. They were targets.

The SUV driver was no insurgent. He was a terrorist.

People who set off bombs on London trains are not insurgents. We would never think of calling them anything other than what they are – terrorists.

Train bombers in Madrid? Terrorists.

Chechen rebels who take over a Russian school and execute children? Terrorists.

Teenagers who strap bombs to their chests and detonate them in an Israeli cafe? Terrorists.

IRA killers? Basque separatist killers? Hotel bombers in Bali? Terrorists all.

Words have meanings. Whether too timid, sensitive or "open-minded," we've resisted drawing a direct line between homicidal bombers everywhere else in the world and the ones who blow up Iraqi civilians or behead aid workers.

A Royal Marines Major is leading 2nd Marines and a problem no one wants to talk about

Yes, you read the headline correct. A Major from Her Royal Majesty's Marines is leading a unit of U.S. Marines (Bn. ? Co. ?) as their (CO? XO) impossible to say from the UK News Telegraph. Major Richard Maltby, 34 from Swindon "led 408 men in a sweep of the Euphrates valley to the east." They uncovered thousands of round of ammo as well as mortars, rocket launchers and machine guns. Quite successful.

"They sometimes have difficulty understanding what I am saying on the radio because of my accent," said Major Maltby.

Oh, sucks, the major is too modest.

I pity those poor American Marines in close proximity to the Major. As you read this those poor Marines have no idea how their accents are silently being replaced with a British accent. In my own case, I had a strong southwest Texas accent where the proper pronunciation of "pen" is "pin" ....you can imagine the horror...the horror of my discovery that my accent had been stolen and replaced with a "Brit" accent. Oh my god! Fortunately for me, at the last second I was saved by an unexpected visit by a high school chum who promptly fell to the ground laughing his ass off at hearing my speech. Oh, the embarrassment of it all still haunts me and is seared seared into my .... Oy! What all this then, ay. Give us a pint here... Ihaven't got all day now have I.

Major General William Webster Jr, commander of the Army's 3rd Division, said in Baghdad that thug operations are "mostly blunted".
I like that, heh, mostly blunted. He should have said: Thuggies are Sucking Hard Wind. Keep them thuggies rolling. Move them out. Roll them out. Head them out. Keep them thuggies moving--- the steam roller of Democracy is paving a new road right up your tuckas.

These are some of the men from from my old alma mater Bravo One Five that made Operation Lighting a huge success that had thugs scrambling for cover away from 2,500 check points, 500 midnight house raids, and netted 1700 "suspected" thuggies. Gentry,w/Air Ground Task Force Like many so many Marines, Gentry is also one who believes it is his duty to shoulder the burden of military service at a point in his life when he was also ready to reap the benefits of life in a free and democratic society.

Marines, Sailors & Families of 4^th LAR,

I wanted to take a brief opportunity to thank each and every one of you for the tremendous opportunity you have afforded me to be associated with this battalion for the past 11 years. Certainly the pinnacle of my career has been the last 19 months as your Battalion Commander, but each of my several billets with this battalion has been remarkable in the fact that I have worked with some of the most professional young men and women that I have ever been associated with in my 23 years in the Marine Corps. I’m as proud as I can be to claim 4^th LAR as my home in the Marine Corps.

I would like to extend welcome to our newest brothers from E Co. in Syracuse, NY &

F Co. in Columbia, SC, both formerly of 8^th Tank battalion. We look forward to your successful transition from Tanker Marines to LAR Marines! We also look forward, as a battalion, to learn from your expertise and the benefit to us of your re-designation into what is now the largest Combat Arms Battalion in the Marine Corps.

I can’t depart without also paying particular homage to the Key Volunteer Network in the battalion. I have become intimately involved with literally hundreds of the family members of the Marines & Sailors of this battalion and hold you all in the highest regard. You will always have a special place in my thoughts. In particular, I must recognize the extraordinary efforts of Mrs. Jennifer Miner, my KVC, but more importantly, my confidant and very dear friend. I cannot define here how much Jennifer has meant to me personally, but I know that those of you who have known her and benefited from her remarkable generosity share my admiration and appreciation.

During my time here, we have been called Light Armored Infantry, Light Armored Vehicle, & finally 4^th Light Armored Reconnaissance Bn. We have been referred to as Ironhorse Marines, Task Force Scorpion and even recently, some of us as part of 8^th Tank Bn., but always as Marines. You have earned your title as Marines in both war and peace and have distinguished yourselves within the most elite fighting force in the world.

Our continued Global War on Terrorism will not end soon and I anticipate that the participation of this battalion will continue to distinguish the Marines and Sailors of 4^th LAR as a professional and lethal force multiplier within the Marine Corps and our nations military.

As I hand over the reins of the battalion to the XO, Maj. Greg Hallinan, I ask only for the same dedication, professionalism & devotion to duty that you have shown me. I have had the distinct pleasure to work with a remarkably adept and professional Inspector-Instructor staff and appreciate with great admiration their continued support and tremendous dedication to our overall success. Without them, we would certainly not be able to attain the level of proficiency that we now enjoy. Thank you again and as I prepare for deployment, I’ll continue to praise the Marines & Sailors of 4^th LAR around the Marine Corps. Best of luck and continued success to all of you.

The reenlistment blues are green

Thanks to a nice $52 million grubstake to sweeten the reenlistment pot you are enlisting faster than recruits can sign up. Great. During the previous ice age, when delta mike was up for reenlistment, grunts were a dime a dozen and no enlistment bonuses were tendered. Today, bonuses can top 30 grand. Go for it. The US OF A needs you.

Effective July 1st DOD increase in Death Gratuity and SGLI

While there is not enough money in the entire galaxy to compensate for the loss of our sons or daughters as a result of thug actions in the combat zone our country, the U S of A, recognizes our loss with appropriate support for the family members left behind.

"The Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act for Defense, the Global War on Terror and Tsunami Relief Act 2005 (Public Law 109-13) increases this immediate cash payment from $12,420 to $100,000 for survivors of those whose death is as a result of hostile actions and occurred in a designated combat operation or combat zone or while training for combat or performing hazardous duty.

The supplemental also increases the maximum amount of SGLI coverage from $250,000 to $400,000 for all service members effective Sept. 1, 2005 and provides that the department will pay or reimburse the premiums to service members, who are deployed in a designated combat zone for $150,000 of SGLI coverage.
Until the effective date for the SGLI increase, the supplemental provides for a special death gratuity of $150,000, retroactive to October 7, 2001, for survivors of those whose death is in a designated combat operation or combat zone or occurred while training for combat or performing hazardous duty."
