Dennis Cunningham was raising his little girl and spending two weekends a month and two weeks a year in Maryland serving his country in the reserves. He had a few semesters left before graduation and was planning on starting a career as a law enforcement officer.
But halfway through the football game on Jan. 3, the phone rang and Cunningham got orders that his unit, Bravo Company 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, was being called up and sent to Iraq.
Cunningham said he answered the phone and a male voice said, "Be here next Monday. We're going to war."
