The Distinguished Service Cross -- second only to the Medal of Honor in military decorations -- has been awarded to U.S. Army Col. James H. Coffman Jr. for his role in leading Iraqi Special Police Commandos through a 5 1/2-hour battle against thugs trying to collect commando heads. Col. Coffman took over as CO when the thug ambush killed or wounded all Iraq officers and using eye contact and sign lanuage led the counter attack under heavy fire. After thug fire shot out his rifle and shooting hand he picked up an abandoned AK and fired with his other hand. When his men started to run out of ammo he collected more from the dead and wounded and when that ammo was gone he collected loose rounds and reloaded magazines w/his good hand holding the magazine between his legs. When back up finally arrived he led led them to his position and continued to fight, refusing to be evacuated for treatment until the battle was over.
